An excerpt from Tolstoy’s War and Peace, which I will complete this time around (last time I was reading it I had a new infant).
This excerpt, from a book first published in 1869, says everything to me about what, finally, drove me away from social networking.
The pressure to be social.
To be enthusiastic.
To please.
To express and express and express.
Even when by nature, you are probably not that way most of the time.
My way is: make your friends, keep them, see them, be close to them, and when you’re not — rest, dream, be private, heal from the clamor and clanging of the world.
In peaceful and sometimes, thoughtless, solitude.
