This morning I picked as many tomatoes off the extremely productive tomato vines in the garden as I could.
They keep growing and growing and growing.
But now, the vines are starting to rot too.
My hands were covered in yellow, sticky stuff from pushing the dying branches aside to get to the fruit of the living ones.
Flies feeding off the rotting vines were disturbed as I searched and picked.
I found some impressive spider webs towards the bottom, hiding round red tomatoes too, the other variety growing there.
Even without crushing any of the tomatoes, my hands smelled strongly of them.
The vines will give, generously, instinctively, in ridiculous amounts before they collapse.
An energetic ending, indeed.
